Painting or pottery, film or flute. Artists of all kinds are discovering the City of Renton’s growing creative community.

Renton is an inspiring and affordable setting for artists, with several events and opportunities to produce, show and sell their work. Public art programs and grants welcome makers to the local arts scene.

Here’s one immediate opportunity: Local artists are invited to submit design proposals for the next round of utility box wraps. Proposals are due January 28, 2023.

What is a creative economy?

A creative economy is the income-earning potential of creative activities and ideas. It’s where arts, culture, business and technology meet. People participate in a creative economy through conventional employment and, most commonly, in freelance ventures. Examples include small businesses offering crafts, entertainment, fine art, small-batch foods and more.

 

Renton welcomes artists

Renton surprises many with its creative advantages:

  • An inspiring setting. Neighborhood parks, the Lake Washington shoreline and several nature trails are just minutes away. Other Renton locations offer an industrial backdrop or sidewalk dining for a downtown vibe.
  • Lower costs. Supplies and workspace leases are more affordable in Renton than in larger cities. In addition, grants for arts-related projects are available through the Renton Municipal Arts Commission and the city’s Neighborhood Program.
  • Business support. City officials can help with the permit process, identifying filmmaking locations or acquiring licenses.

 

Arts commission and public art

The Renton Municipal Arts Commission, formed in 1965, is an active group that advocates, advises and increases funding opportunities for arts and culture activities.

Arts commission programs include the Renton Roadshow concert series, the hydrant painting program, wrapped utility boxes and murals.
